Die-hard Woot.com addicts swarm the etailer on Christmas Day

Dec 25, 2006   //   by Stephan Spencer   //   Online Retail  //  5 Comments

What shopper in their right minds would order “Random Crap” from an etailer who describes the offering thusly:

Little do they know, when their packages arrive
They’ll open them up and exclaim, “What’s this jive?
“I thought I might get a giant-screen TV
Or at least a pair of sunglasses that play MP3s.”
Instead they’ll find garbage that the city dump
Rejected, so we sold it to you chumps.
And so we exclaim, to those let down by their loot:
“Merry Crapmas to all, and to all a crappy woot!”

Hordes of WOOTAHOLICS, that’s who! I just made that word up, to refer to those crazed die-hard addicts of Woot.com who wait up til midnight every night to see what the next day’s product is so they can order it before it sells out.

I am not a Wootaholic, but every once in a while around midnight CST I check what’s on offer, and for the first time ever I saw the fabled “Bag of Crap” for sale!

I was SO EXCITED to see that fabled brown bag! Until… I noticed the SOLD OUT message. Damn!! Alas, I was too late.

ARRRRGGGGH!

Turns out the entire B.O.C. (affectionately referred to as “Blinged Out Cabbages” to the Wooter insiders) inventory of 3000 pieces was sold out in just ELEVEN MINUTES! Jeez, don’t these Wootaholics have anything else to do on Christmas!?!? I wonder if I’m destined to ever lay my hands on a B.O.C.

Ah, to be an etailer like Woot who gets overwhelmed by frenzied mobs of shoppers on Christmas Day. That’s brand devotion.

5 things you probably didn’t know about me – Blog Tag!

Dec 23, 2006   //   by Stephan Spencer   //   Blogging, Search Engines  //  4 Comments

I’m not usually one for propagating memes (a meme is a “copy me” instruction that is backed up by threats and/or promises), but this one spreading amongst the SEO bloggers is kinda fun, so here goes…

  1. I wrote a BBS (bulletin board system) from scratch in BASIC when I was 13. I then operated that BBS for months from my home. I didn’t have a dedicated phone line, so I used our one-and-only phone line, much to the irritation of my mother. She would pick up the phone to use it and got modem tones instead of a dial tone. So she would yell at me to shut it off, and I would dutifully comply, cutting the user off abruptly. The name of my BBS? “Fly By Night BBS”, quite fittingly. ;-)
  2. You may know that I live in New Zealand. But you may not know that I live by the ocean and get to enjoy breathtaking views of Lyttelton Harbor. I feel very blessed. This is what I get to see out the windows while I do the dishes:
    view from the kitchen
  3. I was 19 when I got married. That was in 1990, and I’m still happily married. (yes, to the same woman!)
  4. I am a big fan of the sci-fi shows Stargate SG-1 and Stargate Atlantis. I used to love Star Trek Voyager and Enterprise, but I’ve seen all the episodes too many times now.
  5. I filed a patent application this month. (woohoo!)

Now it’s my turn to tag some SEOs… Paul O’Brien, Chris Smith, Alan Rimm-Kaufman, Shimon Sandler, and Gord Hotchkiss. Thanks to Ian McAnerin for tagging me. :-)

Email Marketing 101 and 201 – in podcasts and PowerPoints

Dec 21, 2006   //   by Stephan Spencer   //   Email  //  1 Comment

Earlier this year I spoke at the Professional Association of Innkeepers International conference. Here are two of the sessions I did, both of which on email marketing:

Email Marketing Fundamentals: PowerPoint (1.4 MB) & Audio (66 minutes, 32 MB)

Advanced Email Marketing: PowerPoint (4 MB) & Audio (62 minutes, 30 MB)

These presentations were targeted to small business owners (owners of Bed & Breakfasts) with a low to moderate level of sophistication in Internet Marketing. Nonetheless, hopefully you will glean some useful tidbits regardless!

Enjoy!

Now if only I could talk like that without the help of a tranzliatin’ machine! ;-)

Even better is my blog tranzliat’d. I actually think it’s an improvement. ;-) I challenge you to read a few entries without laughing! Be sure to read my post “Whizzay you NEED ta kizzle ’bout tha DMCA”.

I’d like to offer my RSS subscribers with an RSS feed that’s been run through Gizoogle. I feel a WordPress plugin comin’ on! In fact, I think I will write that plugin right now!! Stay tuned…
